Here We Go...

Wednesday, September 3

Hey all!

I finally got my dance shoes, yesterday... and I had my first real rehearsal in ballroom heels last night. WOW... It was way more challenging than I ever anticipated. Dancing in those shoes is making me more nervous than I ever imagined I'd be. What if I fall on my face?!? (Although, there are probably several people who would enjoy seeing that! haha)

The tough part is remembering correct foot placement in those ballroom shoes. When you're dancing the Viennese Waltz, you're supposed to step forward, leading with your heel. That's incredibly difficult, when your heels are 2 and 1/2 inches tall! Dean says I'll feel a lot more comfortable tonight, when I strap the shoes on again. He thinks it just takes some getting used to.

I heard Frank Burke on the radio this morning, with Kim Carson, promoting Dare to Dance! He's so funny. This event is going to be so much fun for everyone involved. It's not too late to get tickets!

I wish I could sit here and blog all morning, but I better get to work. I have to run by the studio this afternoon for a final costume fitting. Then, another rehearsal tonight. I'll keep you updated!

Happy Wednesday!

The Countdown Begins...

Thursday, August 28, 2008

It's hard to believe... but we're only a 9 days away from the big "Dare to Dance" event! I think I have 6 rehearsals left before the performance. That kind of stresses me out when I think about it.

I went back to the studio last night, my first rehearsal since last Thursday. It went surprisingly well, despite several days away from Dean. We started working on the intro to my routine. I think you're really going to like it! (Hint: We're working on some sort of super-secret lift.) I know my dance won't be a show-stopper like Manny Rico's or Frank Burke's, but still, I'm keeping my fingers crossed folks will like it!

My biggest frustration right now, is that my ballroom shoes still haven't come in! I ordered them more than three weeks ago. I'm about to call and give the company a piece of my mind! It makes me really nervous, too, to think that we're only a week away and I still haven't danced in heels!

I'm headed back to the studio tonight... I'll let you know how it goes. Also, on Saturday I'm meeting with the hair and makeup people, to talk about how to make me look all fancy for the big event. It's like Halloween two months early... only better!

Just a reminder, please buy your tickets! You're running out of time to do it... and this is one charity fundraiser you don't want to miss. I was talking to Frank and Manny the other day, and I can tell, their performances are going to be over-the-top, amazing!!!

Type more at you soon...

P.S. If you're reading this, I'd love for you to leave a comment. Tell me what's on your mind! :)

Dancin' Fool

Friday, August 22, 2008

Hey gang!
I hope you enjoy the new clips Holly Ashley with Partnership added to the website. Those are just a taste of the fun we're having putting this fundraiser together! I can't wait to see everyone else's dances. You have to come to this event! Where else can you have so much fun and help two really important organizations?!?

Hopefully, the new video shows some progress from my first Viennese Waltz lesson. Dean says I'm getting "lighter in his arms", and that's a good thing. Right now, my biggest concern is that I'll lose all my newly discovered "skills" when I put on ballroom shoes. I ordered ballroom shoes online almost two weeks ago, and they still haven't come in... which is so frustrating! Hopefully, they'll be here by my next rehearsal. (It's Wednesday night.)

I want to encourage you to watch Channel 3 every morning. Jed and Latrice talking about "Dare to Dance" in our community calendar segment. You can see that around 6:20 a.m. Also, be sure and listen to Talk Radio (102.3) Tuesday morning at 8. Frank Burke, Manny Rico, and myself will all be there talking about the "Dare to Dance" event. We've only got a couple weeks left... so hurry and buy your tickets. Also, don't forget to go vote!

Have a great weekend, everyone... I'll check in with you next week!
Rachel

P.S. Isn't Keith the most adorable thing you've ever seen doing the Tango! If you haven't yet, go check out his video!

Week Three

Wednesday, August 20, 2008

Last night, I had the first of three rehearsals this week. Dean and I learned another step to put in our routine, called the Astaira. It's tricky, but once we get it down, I think it may be my favorite step, yet. Right now, the biggest issue I'm having is remembering to let Dean lead. I think all those years of dancing and performing as a soloist have me wanting to take charge, and that's not the way ballroom dancing works. Dean says it just takes practice to break old habits.

I'm excited to rehearse again, tonight. Hopefully, the steps I've learned will begin to "gel" together. But most of all, I'm excited to see Keith's routine. (He and I are rehearsing at the same time tonight... and up until now he's been super secretive!) Keith's been practicing his dance non-stop for the last two days at the house. Apparently, he's dancing the Tango to "Phantom of the Opera." Last night, I caught him downloading various versions of the song from iTunes. He's so funny. He keeps telling me how he can't wait to show everyone his "Dancing With the Stars-- Mark Ballas" face. I've seen it... and let me tell you, it's a "Must See."

If you're reading this, please come see our performance. We want a packed house so it will raise a lot of money to help Partnership and the Kidney Foundation. Also, don't forget to vote for your favorite dancer!!

I guess that's it for now... I'll try to update tomorrow and give you the skinny on Keith's skills.

Viennese Waltz

Saturday, August 16, 2008

Welcome to my blog!

I've never had a blog before, so you may have to bear with me. This is a new adventure... much like learning the Viennese Waltz. Let me be the first to say, I'm amazed if you're actually reading this!

I'm so excited to participate in the "Dare to Dance" fundraiser. It's even more fun than I imagined. It's been about three years since I danced in college, and I didn't realize how much I miss just moving! It's hard to find free time to do anything when you work in news.

So far, I've had four rehearsals with Dean Botting, my dance instructor. I'm finding that some of my ballet training helps, but it makes it harder in some ways, too. There are a lot of "ballerina" habits I picked up over the years that I need to break in order to be a good ballroom dancer. I just hope I get the steps down good enough that I can enjoy the performance night.

Most people know by now that my fiance (Keith) and I are going head to head for this competition. He's really into it... which makes me want to beat him even more!! All joking aside, he's being very sweet about learning how to dance for our wedding in April. He says "Dare to Dance" will be good practice. Last week, the house grew very quiet, and out of nowhere he told me how excited he is to practice his dance with me. I told him I was excited, too, but between you and me, I may limit those practice sessions. I don't want him to be too good!

If you're reading this, please go make a donation to the Kidney foundation! (It doesn't have to be for me...although that'd be great!) Also, please come watch our performance. You have to see Councilman Rico do the Hustle! He's awesome!!!

I guess that's about it for now. I have three rehearsals next week, starting Tuesday night. I'll try to update more then!!
